Rhetorical Appeals of the Goodyear Tire Commercial

The Goodyear Tire Commercial used the rhetorical appeals Ethos and Logos in combination to convince the audience to buy the Goodyear tires. Ethos was incorporated because of the name brand, Goodyear. Goodyear is a well-known tire company and is very credible. The men being familiar with the name and good reputation of the tires alone will help lure customers in. Logos was incorporated into the commercial by luring the audience, men, into buying the tires by making them believe that the only way for their wives not to wreck their precious cars is by having those specific tires on the car. By using a cause and effect example as evidence to convince the audience, the men are showed what power the tires have. The intense music and dramatic scenes of the woman driving make the men imagine their own wives or mothers or daughters behind the wheel. They are scared and worried about the women ruining their cars and want to buy the tires as a sense of relief.

  1. This commercial is clearly SEXIST, the comment the narrator made about pyroglass protecting the tires even when a woman is behind the wheel made me chuckle. Chuckle, not because i found it humorous but i thought it was a 'low blow'. Being of the 21st generation, i would find that sexist. So I wonder what made it possible for marketers to portray women in such light during this period? I think it would be good for you to think of that same question.

  2. You mention logos in the first sentence, and then do not incorporate it into the rest of your paragraph. Also i think that the concern of the men watching this commercial is on what damage will happen to his car if he doesn't these tires. the concern is not really focused on the safety of women driving the cars.

  3. I have to agree what Duncan and Margo both said. The commercial is very sexist and almost offensive making it seem like women are incapable of driving or that they need really good tires because they might end up ruining the car. I agree with Margo because it almost seems to shift the importance and safety of the woman to the importance of the car.
